You can edit a button symbol after you have created it. When you edit a button symbol, all instances reflect the edits.
If the button has been imported from a library or another Fireworks document, editing the button in the current document will break the link to the previous document.

To open a button in the Button Editor:

Double-click any instance. |

Select a button and choose Modify > Symbol > Edit Symbol. |
To edit an existing button symbol:
1 | Open the Button Editor. |
2 | Click the tab for any state. |
3 | Select the object and edit it as you would any object in the document. |
